My first (and only) published poem

Eye to eye
My palms were pools
I thought I'd die
There were no rules

I felt my face glow
I asked myself "why?"
I said "Hello"
She said "Hi"

My words were a mess
Back rushed the fears
Her answer was yes
I couldn't believe my ears

Written as an English class assignment my freshman year in High School. Ms. Debbie Keel saw to it that it was published in the Aztec, New Mexico city paper. This would have been 1985 or 1986.

I don't remember this poem being about asking anyone specific out. I think it developed from my perception of how such a thing would take place. I'm glad to see that I imagined a positive outcome even though I filled the poem with my insecurities. :)
